When Nathalie was at last allowed into the first aid room she found a pale-looking Charlie on a couch, propped up by a pillow.
He gave her a weak smile. ‘Sorry about all of the fuss. Did they find the camera?’
Nathalie shook her head at him. ‘Typical, you’ve nearly died and all you can think about is the camera! As a matter of fact you threw it on the walkway as you fell in. They’re out there retrieving it now, we think it’s okay.’
‘Think it’s okay?’
‘Yes, think it’s okay. But you are more important than the camera, why didn’t you just drop it and save yourself?’ She smiled. ‘I’m in enough shit already, letting you go out there all on your own. If you had drowned, it would have been my fault.’
‘But I didn’t go out there on my own. A maintenance guy from Marine Corps helped me along the walkway. Said I would be fine if I kept both my feet on the ground and left me to it.’
‘Well you should’ve asked him to stay with you. What on earth did you think you were doing?’
Charlie tried to get up but was gently restrained by a medical orderly. ‘My job,’ he said, resignedly lying back on the couch.
‘Well, you’re lucky that these guys are experts, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do your job,’ chided Nathalie. ‘You’d be under one of those thrashing machines.’
She pulled one of the orderlies aside and whispered a question in his ear. The orderly didn’t attempt to hide the answer.
‘He swallowed a bit of seawater and has a bit of concussion. A few hours’ rest and he’ll be fine.’
‘I’m fine now’ said Charlie. ‘We’ve got a shoot to do this afternoon, and I’m the only one who can operate the camera.’
‘You’re not moving,’ ordered Nathalie. ‘And we haven’t got the camera yet. It’s still out there, next to one of those damn ducks.’
Charlie didn’t put up much of a fight. It was obvious that in his state he could hardly walk properly, let alone handle a camera on a moving wave machine. Nathalie pacified him and took control. She asked one of the engineers if he would be good enough to rescue the camera from the floating walkway and told Dan to prepare for an audio interview with the chief engineer after lunch.
‘We have enough pictures to cover most of the sound. If Charlie and the camera are okay, at the end of the day we could get an establishing shot to stick on the front,’ she said practically. There was no way she wanted to miss out on this interview. Perhaps not having the camera for a while was a good thing. She might get some more candid stuff about the mining ship dispute without the glare of the lights.
Lunch consisted of a few dried sandwiches, which they snacked upon while sitting on the equipment boxes in one of the featureless offices. None of them were hungry. After further reassurance from the medical orderly Nathalie had left Charlie in the medical room.
